Information for Potential Access to HE Students

Introduction

Certa is an awarding organisation for the Access to HE Diploma.   This means we hold a licence from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) to assure the quality and fitness for purpose of the Access to HE courses which are delivered by providers including further education colleges.

You may have the potential and ability to study for a degree or professional qualification but have been unable to do so because your education was disrupted due to family, financial, social or personal circumstances.  You may have few, if any, formal qualifications, have been out of education for some years and thought you had missed any opportunity to pursue goals of higher education.

People on Access to HE courses come from a broad age range, varied backgrounds and from different ethnic groups.  What they share is a desire and potential to study for a degree or professional qualification successfully.

Every Access to HE course is made up of a variety of academic subjects supported by a compulsory core element.  The academic subjects are related to the course students hope to study at university.  While you may have experience in life and in work, you may have little or no recent experience of studying.  To help with this, the core element will include study skills and will give you the essential skills needed to become a confident student and problem solver.

The Access to HE Diploma has been specially developed to provide you with a second chance to go on to a degree or diploma programmes in higher education or in other professional areas.

How to Apply?

The first point of contact should be the provider/college where you would like to study.  Certa works with the following providers/colleges who offer a range of diplomas.  No formal qualifications are usually required to be accepted on to Access to HE courses but you should be committed to developing the ability to study.  At an informal interview, the provider will assess what help you will need to complete an Access to HE course and advise about a programme of study that is appropriate to your needs.

You can apply at any time but it is advisable to apply early.  Colleges hold open events for many of the programmes and at these events, you can find out more about the programmes and meet tutors and current students.  Contact the providers/colleges of choice or visit their websites for more information about entry requirements, open events etc.
